ATHLETICS AT HARRISBURG ACADEMY
Athletics foster the qualities of teamwork, sportsmanship, cooperation, commitment, and lifelong fitness. For this reason, Harrisburg Academy is committed to a no-cut policy in our athletics program. We encourage all students in grades 6-12 to play at least one interscholastic sport. Academy students often play more than one sport while keeping up a challenging academic schedule and participating in other co-curricular activities.
Harrisburg Academy’s varsity teams are a part of the PA Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), District III. Through a cooperative sponsorship agreement with Trinity High School, Academy athletes have an opportunity to play on Trinity’s football, cross country, and golf teams in the fall and lacrosse, baseball, softball, and track and field teams in the spring. Trinity students are eligible to play on the Academy’s field hockey team.
Fall Sports: Both of the Academy’s athletics fields are busy in the fall. The varsity girls’ field hockey team plays its games on the upper field when the Middle School cross country team isn’t training. The Middle School and varsity boys’ soccer teams meet their opponents on John Crain Kunkel Field; varsity girls’ tennis plays on the adjacent tennis courts. Beginning in the fall of 2011, Director of Tennis April Gift will oversee a Middle School Tennis Club, and in Upper School, student will be able to participate in Golf Club. Students grades K through 8 also may participate in the Academy’s Fall Youth Swimming program.
Winter Sports: During the winter, the Louis Lehrman Gymnasium positively bounces with both Middle and Upper School basketball games. Junior varsity and varsity girls’ and boys’ basketball compete against area schools in PIAA District III. Students in grades 9-12 also participate in PIAA District III swimming and diving meets.
Spring Sports: The spring season finds our Middle and Upper School athletes competing in girls’ soccer, boys’ lacrosse, and boys’ tennis. Varsity boys’ lacrosse, varsity girls’ soccer and varsity boys’ tennis compete in PIAA District III. In addition, we offer a Youth Lacrosse program in grades 4-6 and Swim Club for students in grades 2-8. Students grades K through 8 also may participate in the Academy’s Spring Youth Swimming program.
Harrisburg Academy’s Athletics Hall of Fame, started in 2004, recognizes the outstanding achievements of former students, coaches, teams, and friends of our program. These Hall of Fame awardees serve as a source of inspiration for all students.
