Harrisburg Academy raised $2,800 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients program, AND, in an all-school assembly March 20, 11 girls of all ages and US Biology Teacher Mary Toth donated 10 inches of hair each to Locks of Love. Four boys, two teachers, and a parent had their heads shaved to show support. Check out the photos, and congratulations to all!

Senior Maike V . has won the national Scholastic Arts American Vision Award for our region. Her photo, "Glistening Gold," will be exhibited at the prestigious New York Arts Gallery in SOHO. In 2008, more than 100,000 artworks and manuscripts were reviewed by regional programs across the country. Only 10,000 were forwarded to the national judging. Each year, approximately 1,000 students win awards on the national level. Maike's work placed in the top 1 percent of all submissions in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition. Senior Allison Z.’s art work and poem, "Ginger Elixir," were selected by a panel for the inaugural edition of 24/7/365, the journal of Penn State University College of Medicine Department of Humanities (page 18).

As her National Honor Society service project, Junior Ilsa S. is assembling school kits for children overseas whose lives have been disrupted by war. She needs the following NEW items:
- Padded or spiral notebooks of ruled paper approximately 8" X 10-1/2" totaling 150-200 sheets (if using 70-count notebooks, please include three); do not include loose-leaf paper
- One blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well)
- One 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other
- One pencil sharpener
- Six new, unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with a rubber band
- One eraser approximately 2-1/2" long
- 12 sheets of construction paper in assorted colors (if necessary, fold in half to fit into the school kit bag)
- One box of 16 or 24 crayons
- One sturdy cloth bag approximately 12" X 14" with cloth handles or drawstring closure (see below for downloadable patterns)
She also needs sturdy fabric – denim, corduroy, twill, upholstery, and drapery – to make cloth bags. Minimum size required is 13 by 33 inches; she can also accept bolts of fabric. Starting Tuesday, January 22, collection boxes will be located at the front entrances. For large donations, please contact Ilsa by leaving a message at the front desk. Go green! As part a service-learning project in Mary Toth’s environmental science class, the entire school community is being asked to step up its efforts to save the environment. We’re now recycling:
- Aluminum cans – marked bins throughout the school
- Glass and plastic bottles – blue bins throughout the school (remove lids first)
- White paper – bins in classrooms
- Glossy paper – bins at front entrances, box in mailroom
- Electronics – bins at front entrances
Change a light and save energy. Take the pledge at ENERGY STAR. Our goal is 100 pledges. Our school community already has pledged to save more than $4,400 in energy costs and 69,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions.
