Eric Silverman ’99 is working as a research fellow at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. His main focus is a multidisciplinary project called the Care Life Cycle, which brings together social scientists, statisticians, demographers, and computer scientists (like him) to develop ways to prepare for the impacts of the UK's ageing population. The Care Life Cycle Project is building innovative computer models, based on principles of complexity science, which will allow the world to develop better ways of distributing and planning health and social care services in the coming years.
This is Eric’s first experience working on a research project of this size and scope. As he puts it, “There's a lot to learn here, from finding ways to conduct sensible research in a large and varied group of academics, to getting to grips with interacting with government policy-makers.” He feels fortunate to be working on something so ambitious and that provides him with so many opportunities to develop his skills and learn new methods of research. To learn more about Eric’s work, go to: http://www.southampton.ac.uk/clc/. |

Steven Pecht ’09 is the project leader for the University of Michigan’s Solar Refrigerator Team. They are a subgroup of the M-Heal organization, a student group that strives to improve access to healthcare in underdeveloped countries through social entrepreneurship. The goal of the Solar Refrigerator Team is to build a mobile and rugged refrigerator specifically designed to maintain vaccines in hot weather climates. By utilizing a water absorption refrigeration cycle, the design of Steven’s team minimizes dependence on resources that are not readily available in underdeveloped areas and can therefore, be rebuilt using parts from a common hardware store. A prototype of the refrigerator was completed this past summer.
While the majority of his time is being spent on the final construction of the solar refrigerator prototype, Steven is also heavily involved with the programming of a remote monitoring and reporting system for the refrigerators — the goal being to have the ability to monitor functionality for each deployed unit and to collect data to help further refine their design. |
