Academy receives $318,000 for scholarship from Hoopy estate
Harrisburg Academy recently received a $318,000 bequest from the estate of businessman and philanthropist George C. Hoopy, Class of 1926, to create an endowed scholarship fund. Charter Day, April 6, to kick off triple anniversary celebration
The school’s triple anniversary – 225th year of its founding, 200th year of its incorporation by the Commonwealth, and 50th year at its current site – kicks off at 9:30 a.m., Monday, April 6, in the State Capitol Main Rotunda. (The actual anniversary is April 4 – a Saturday this year.) State Sen. Jeffrey E. Piccola and State Reps. Glen R. Grell and Sheryl Delozier will be hand to present legislative citations. Harrisburg Academy Middle School students took eight first-place, two second-place, three category awards, and two special award winners at the Capital Area Science and Engineering Fair (CASEF). In addition, , and to CASEF Junior Division Grand Champion Chloe P. was named Junior Division Grand Champion for her behavioral and social sciences project, "Are the poor being supersized?" Other first-place winners were Rachel A., Becky M., Aneel M., Nick S., Shannon P., Tristan W., and Nate S. Second-place winners were Claire G. and Zachary B. Claire won a special award from the American Society of Highway Engineers, and Nick won a special award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Aneel, Nate, and Nick won awards for scoring highest in their categories.
Cameron C., fourth grade, joined others to present the annual Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Report to the Nation in Washington, DC. The Report to the Nation highlights the organization's achievements during the past year. A Webelos Scout, Cameron has earned numerous scouting awards. During the five-day trip, the delegation met with dignitaries at the White House, the U.S. Supreme Court, Arlington National Cemetery, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, the Pentagon, the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, VA, and visited various historical sites.
Thomas C., senior, was among 20 or so Model U.N. Conference delegates recognized for diplomatic skills and knowledge at Penn State Harrisburg. Twelve other Academy students joined Cheney to represent the Netherlands, Switzerland, Hungary, and Turkey at the 37th annual event: seniors Ilsa S., David B., and Kemal A.; juniors Laura F., Somee K., Jule A., Sophia K., Ted O., and Alex M.; and freshmen Andrew M., David L., and Andrew D. Delegates devised resolutions to contemporary global issues such as nuclear proliferation, world hunger, and genocide.
Susquehanna Independent Athletic Conference (SIAC) named Max B., senior, and Adam C., junior, to the All-Conference First Team; Kemal A., senior, and Zachary C., junior, earned Honorable Mentions.
