Quick Way to Earn a Denim Day!

The Admission Office would like to invite all MS/US students to share what they love about Harrisburg Academy by bringing a friend to our Admission Open House on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m.  By bringing a friend to tour our school, student will be showing them much of what our school has to offer and earn a Denim Day in return (date to be announced later).  To be eligible for the Denim Day, your student must stop by the Admission Office or send an email, no later than Thursday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m. (p.s. If you attend, too, your family will be entered into our drawing for $200 Academy Cash!).  See you there! Questions?  Please contact Jessica Warren.

Harrisburg Academy Responds Generously to the Haiti Appeal

The final results for the Harrisburg Academy Haiti emergency appeal are in.  Many people contributed either by sending us a personal check or dropping coins and bills in the jars or donating the proceeds of bake sales, including the 4th grade moms who raised $291.24 at their bake sale last week.  Also, the Upper School Student Council decided to give $500 from the proceeds of the Snow Ball dance.  We are assured by the organizations to which we are sending our dollars that they will all make it to Haiti in the near future.  Some people - maybe a family that is enduring great hardship - will have their burdens lightened, at least a bit, by our gifts that came in sometimes one penny at a time.  Special thanks to the student members of the Haiti Fundraising committee: Seth C. '15, Rachel D. '15, who on her own arrived the Monday after the earthquake with the jars and posters for the lobby, and Alex R. '12 .

Checks   $725.00.... Jars   $1,141.67... Bake Sales   $391.24... Upper School   $500.00
=Total   $2,757.91

Middle School Roundtable Discussion Meeting

Grade 5 & 6 parents: Wednesday, February 24 at 6:30 p.m.
Grade 7 & 8 parents: Thursday, February 25 at 6:30 p.m.

We would like to invite you to be part of a roundtable discussion regarding social challenges faced by our students today.  We expect that our conversation will be a wide-ranging one, covering topics such as social networking, appropriate technology usage, and social pressures surrounding drugs and alcohol. We hope parents will share their strategies and ideas in an effort to coordinate a consistent message regarding behavior and the vital boundaries necessary to help our students make good decisions.  Ms. Fiona Williston, Prevention Program Supervisor from the Cumberland-Perry Drug and Alcohol Commission, will be available to share her expertise regarding adolescent substance use and answer questions. Please come and join us in the Meeting Room for a cup of hot chocolate, a few sweets, and a great roundtable discussion.  Please RSVP to Carol Riordan in the Middle School (or ext. 327).

Annual Winter College Fair

February 17, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Harrisburg Academy's annual Winter College Fair may have been postponed, but it's going to be just as beneficial to our students and visitors from local schools.  Please click here for a full event schedule update.  As a reminder, all juniors must attend as part of the college prep class; sophomores are strongly urged to come, and everyone is welcome.  Click here to see an updated list of colleges attending.  Sophomores and others, please R.S.V.P. to Mrs. Roller, Mrs. Lauchlan, or Mrs. Barrett at the front desk.

This event is open to the public, so please pass this invitation along to a friend or neighbor.

Academy families attending the fair are asked to be gracious hosts and park across the street behind Perkins in the white lined spaces that belong to the Radisson.  This is not mandatory, just a request for those of you who will not be seriously inconvenienced by parking there. We are having our college representatives use the back parking lot, and guests from other schools in the front.

Upper School Drama presents "Hedda Gabler"

Feb. 26 & 27, 7 p.m.  |  Feb. 28, 2 p.m.

McCormick Auditorium

Harrisburg Academy Upper School Drama presents Henrik Ibsen's masterpiece, "Hedda Gabler".
Hedda Gabler is one of the world theater's iconic characters.  Unwilling to accept her femininity and objectified by the men who claim her, Hedda faces a fate that is as unrelenting as any Delphic Oracle could have pronounced.  The spare and classic structure of the play reflects not only Ibsen's dramaturgy but the unflinching, uncompromising moral conviction of its leading character.  Questions?  Please contact Richard Rauenzahn.

Congratulations to...

Amelia N. '17 for being mentioned in the Patriot-News as a member of the Twin Ponds Pre-Juvenile Synchronized Skating.  She will skate this weekend at the 2010 Reflections Synchro Invitational on Feb. 14 at the Giant Center

Upper School students for submitting 5,984 total CAS hours (Creativity - 2,231; Action - 1,964; Service - 1,789) for the first semester!  We commend your hard work outside of the classroom.

MS English teacher Kristen Spangler for success with PA state certification.  Mrs. Spangler took the final exam (the PRAXIS II content knowledge test in English) in January for her application for certification.  Not only did she complete all certification courses with a solid 4.0 GPA, but she received the ETS's highest award, the Recognition of Excellence, for scoring within the top 15% of all test takers for this particular content knowledge test.  Her exact score was a 200 out of a possible range of 100-200... so actually in the top 1 percent! Congrats!
