Dear Families and Friends,
A remarkable fellow by the name of Ted Sizer died last month. During the last twenty years I've admired his extraordinary commitment to American education so I decided to make him the subject of my letter to you.

Ted Sizer played multiple roles in American education: high school teacher, university dean (twice), head of school at Phillips Academy, scholar, author of eighteen books, and creator of a coalition of unique schools.  Click here to read more...

Triple Anniversary Celebrations Continue

The stage was set; yearbooks from the mid-fifties in place, blueprints of the new site on Erford Road displayed, and other documents detailing the history of Harrisburg Academy on hand, the celebration of the 50 years Harrisburg Academy has been at its present location was about to begin.

A recent article in the Patriot-News highlighted a Sept. 15, 1959 story about Harrisburg Academy's new location and educational goals. The article went on to read, "A hundred and seventy-five years of tradition will continue on September 28 when the Harrisburg Academy occupies its new quarters."

Former Harrisburg Academy Trustee, Pat Cameron, and former vice president of the board, Tiger Burch, were on hand to enjoy the celebration and recall the history of the school and the changes they observed over the years. As they spoke, names of local physicians, businessmen and politicians were mentioned and noted as Academy graduates. Clearly, this was an accurate testimonial of the impact Harrisburg Academy has had on Harrisburg and its surrounding communities.

Elsie Burch, widow of former board president, Ernest Burch, led the group outside to officially commemorate this historic event by unveiling a banner that read, "225 Years Young".  The group returned to the building to enjoy refreshments and take tours of the campus led by upper school students.

Regional Faculty Training by GreatBooks Foundation

This week, Harrisburg Academy is hosting a two-day training course on using the Shared Inquiry™ method of learning through reading and discussion with students offered by the Great Books Foundation. About 16 to 18 educators from around the area will attend the workshop, including our own 3rd and 4th grade homeroom teachers.  The training focuses on learning questioning strategies that keep classroom discussions lively and focused and improve students' reading, critical-thinking, writing, and oral communication skills.  Some of the teachers in our Middle School have already been trained in this method and are employing these techniques in their classes.  The Shared Inquiry™ method will augment our current reading instruction and will allow the teachers to help develop higher-level skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking critically.

Go GREEN at Harrisburg Academy

This current GO GREEN update is about our school's Food Service Department.  In an effort to reduce waste and save energy, Harrisburg Academy's food service staff serves all lunches on segmented trays instead of using multiple dishes. This change comes as a result of a waste study done by the food service staff during the 2008-09 school year and supporting national statistics. By reducing the amount of dishes we have cut our food waste by 32% so far this school year!
