Harrisburg Area Ranked Among Top 10 Recession-Proof Cities

The Daily Beast website ranked 20 metropolitan areas across the country as being recession-proof, and the Harrisburg region landed at No. 7. The news/gossip/opinion website said the areas showed growth in overall employment, per capita personal income and gross domestic product. Also, the cities on the list have a higher per capita personal income level above the nation's.

America’s Best Places to Raise a Family 2010

When Amelia Hamilton-Morris and her husband William were starting a family, they had to choose between living in Iowa, where his family had settled three generations earlier, or in her native Houston.  They eventually decided to raise their children in Iowa’s capital city, Des Moines, because it boasted good schools, affordable housing and a strong sense of community.  Two children and 17 years later, Hamilton-Morris is still enthusiastic about their decision.

Harrisburg/Carlisle named a ‘most livable’ area by Forbes

HARRISBURG – The Harrisburg/Carlisle area was named the fifth-most desirable place to live in Forbes magazine’s annual “America’s Most Livable Cities” report.  The ranking represents a big jump for the Harrisburg/Carlisle area, which came in at 12th in last year’s report. In compiling the list, Forbes said it measured five data points in the country’s 200 largest Metropolitan Statistical Areas: unemployment, crime, income growth, the cost of living, and artistic and cultural opportunities.

Are better days ahead? Forbes magazine says so.

HARRISBURG – Doing what we've been doing economically has been exactly the right prescription for curing the midstate of its recession malaise.
Forbes magazine ranked the Harrisburg/Carlisle area fifth on its list of American cities recovering the fastest from the recession.  The Omaha, Neb., area topped the list, which is made up of the 100 largest Metropolitan Statistical Areas. Pittsburgh ranked fourth.

Harrisburg region among 40 strongest economies, study says

HARRISBURG – The greater Harrisburg area was ranked 16th among the 40 strongest U.S. metro economies, according to a recent study at the Brookings Institution.  The institution analyzed 100 largest metropolitan areas during the second quarter in 2009 based on four key indicators: employment change, unemployment change, gross metropolitan product and home price change. The top rated cities scored the highest when those factors were averaged together.

HARRISBURG – Hershey-Harrisburg, Pennsylvania has been named America’s No. 1 Minor League Market by Street and Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal/SportsBusiness Daily.  The market stands out for its fan support for the hometown teams despite tough economic conditions.  The SportsBusiness Journal/SportsBusiness Daily study, which follows similar efforts from 2007 and 2005, compares fluctuations of fan support to the unemployment, income and population changes over the past five seasons in each of the 239 U.S. communities that is home to a minor league franchise.

HARRISBURG – The Harrisburg region might not be as picturesque as Portland, Maine, as bustling as Bethesda, Md., or as cultured as Cambridge, Mass.
But the region had enough going for it to rank 12th on Forbes.com's new list of "America's Most Livable Cities."  The magazine ranked the largest continental U.S. cities based on five key measures of quality of life. Only metropolitan regions of 500,000 or larger were studied.  The greater Harrisburg area landed in 12th place, just behind Denver and Pittsburgh, which weighed in at 10th.

HARRISBURG – Forbes.com has compiled a list of the most livable places, and it calls the Harrisburg/Carlisle region No. 12.  According to Forbes, the list was compiled from metro areas with populations of 500,000, based on five-year income growth per household and cost of living from Moody’s Economy.com; crime datat and leisure index from Sperling’s Best Places; and annual unemployment statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistis.
