McCormick Medal

Presented by the Board of Trustees to a member of the Academy community in recognition of dedicated leadership and voluntary, meritorious, lifelong service to the school

Steven B. Stewart: 2018 Recipient

The McCormick Medal is awarded each year to one individual who exemplifies leadership and service to Harrisburg Academy.  This year’s recipient, Steve Stewart, is an alumnus parent and retired longtime Middle School history teacher at Harrisburg Academy.  Stewart accepted the award at Harrisburg Academy’s annual Founders Day celebration on May 20.

Stewart spent his entire 44-year career teaching at the Academy, starting in 1969 and retiring in 2013.  He is the longest tenured teacher in school history.  In addition to his work in the classroom, Stewart also served in the following roles:  director of summer camp (1976-1989); assistant head of Middle School (1995-2000); athletics director (1970-1989); Middle School athletics director (1989-1995); and coach of multiple Middle School and Varsity athletics teams (soccer, basketball, and softball) between 1969 and 2007.

Stewart’s resume includes many other accolades and highlights.

He was the organizer of the Susquehanna Independent Athletic Conference (SIAC) league and executive director from 1970 to 1985.  He received Harrisburg Academy’s Trustee Award (1994) presented by the Board of Trustees to a member of the Academy community in recognition of outstanding service and dedication to the school.  In 2005, Stewart received the Randolph St. John Teaching Award, a marquis award presented by the Upper School Student Council to the teacher who best embodies the high standards of the Academy faculty.  Three years later, Stewart was inducted into the Academy’s Athletics Hall of Fame due to his demonstrated deep commitment to successful Academy athletics endeavors.  Harrisburg Academy honored Stewart when he retired in 2013 through the creation of an endowed fund, the Steven B. Stewart History Award.  This $200 award is now given annually to a 7th or 8th grade student who demonstrates a genuine interest in history, politics, and contemporary global issues.

Stewart and his wife, Joanna, are proud parents to alumnus Greg ’02 and grandparents to Gavin (age 3) and Ellie (age 2).  As a retiree, Stewart continues volunteering at Lewisberry United Methodist Church in a variety of ways.  He also enjoys reading, writing poetry, and working outside on his two-acre property.
