Student Ambassador Profile: Sophia H. '20

Sophia H. '20 - Student AmbassadorWhat do you see as the strengths of Harrisburg Academy?
I think some of the strengths of Harrisburg Academy include providing a well-rounded and rigorous education, having a kind and helpful faculty and staff, and offering many activities outside of school for students to enjoy.  For example, I enjoy going to International Night every year -- for the food and the performances.  In the Upper School, the social activities are fun too, like the bonfire, the corn maze, and movie marathons.

How are you involved in the Academy community?
In school, I have participated in the Upper School Orchestra, Yearbook Club, US Student Council, Quiz Bowl, Science Olympiad, US Piano Ensemble, and Fencing Club, and I was an assistant for the LS Orchestra.  I have also been selected to the PMEA District 7 and Central Region Orchestra Festivals, and I play violin in the pit for school musicals.  I’m also the treasurer of the Tri-M Music Honors Society.  Outside of school, I play violin in the Harrisburg Youth Symphony Orchestra, I take private piano and violin lessons, and I enjoy recreational reading.

How do you think the culture at Harrisburg Academy differs from other schools?
Because our class sizes are smaller, students know and become good friends with many others in their grade or other grades.  There is also a low tolerance for bullying.  The teachers genuinely enjoy their jobs and are willing to go the extra mile in order to help students understand concepts.  Since our school also offers education to ages 3-18, older students often interact with younger ones.  This all provides a close-knit community which sets Harrisburg Academy apart from other schools.
