Dear Friends,

Happy New Year to you and your family!  I hope the holiday season was filled with love and laughter, and that you are finding yourself off to a successful start in 2017.

We are so thankful for the generous gifts we received from our alumni at the end of December.  Your generosity helps to start 2017 off on the right foot.  As is common with this time of year, we are looking for ways to better ourselves.  Whether that is physical, mental, intellectual or emotional, we are looking for ways to have new perspective.  I like to call it "finding your adventure," because for me, the word adventure implies a sense of fun.  I believe 2017 will be a year of bringing adventure to our alumni community, too.  Specifically, I've received several inquiries from alumni for networking introductions.  It is wonderful to see this momentum build as more and more alumni are receptive to opening their doors to new and beneficial relationships.

I can't thank you enough for making my job truly rewarding and fulfilling.  Entertain the adventure of 2017 and open your doors -- you will find that there are many values to being Harrisburg Academy alumni!  All the best in 2017.

Alumni Becoming Leaders In Our Community

Since we launched The John Harris Circle in 2011, over $1.5 million has been contributed to the Academy Fund.  This collective generosity supports our students, faculty, and academic programs annually.  We continue to believe John Harris Circle members are our best advocates to sustain our growth and ensure our strong future.  This month we are fortunate to welcome three new alumni members into our leadership society:  Albert Farr '05, Matthew Farrell '04, and Charles Newcomb '98. Thank you!

If you are interested in becoming a leader within our community, please reach out to Michael LaRue.

Building Our "Academy Nation"

Recently, when speaking with the father of a prospective student, I mentioned that you -- our alumni -- actively support fellow alumni and current students.  He was surprised to hear that you provide career planning advice to younger fellow Academy alumni, lead "Lunch 'n' Learn" sessions with current students, and give to the school's Academy Fund.

Although our alumni program is young and we are not yet an "Academy nation," the slow and continuously expanding presence of alumni support within the Academy community has become increasingly significant.  Michael LaRue's recent blog about the power of alumni connections illustrates this very point.  More importantly, you have told us that you recognize the value of your Academy experience and want to support fellow alumni and current students in a variety of ways.

Given the ambitious nature of our teachers and their desire to create the best educational experiences for their students, future need for increased support from you is certain.  While we try to minimize annual tuition increases, we are vigilant about monitoring our expenses and finding additional ways to support our academic and co-curricular programs.  The reality is that we, similar to other independent schools, will rely on you (as well as local and regional foundations) to help support these additional costs.

Thank you for your generous support to this year's Academy Fund.  Our results exceed last year's by a wide margin.  As of the end of December, alumni pledges and contributions account for 77 percent of the June 30, 2017 goal.  By June 30, we need 70 more gifts that total $13,000 collectively.  Your participation matters, regardless of the size of your gift -- and you may designate your gift however you wish.

Our students are our purpose, and you are our partners.  Your time and financial support are tremendously valuable today.  They are the foundation for increased amounts we will need in the future.

It was a proud moment when the prospective parent realized the value of your support.  The role you play today in the life of Harrisburg Academy is critical -- we cannot thank you enough!  Continuing to build our "Academy nation" is equally important for the future.  Participate now.  The foundation we are building together today will lead to impressive results years from now.

With warm regards,

CONTINUED VALUE THROUGH HARRISBURG ACADEMY'S ALUMNI NETWORK

by Michael LaRue '02, Assistant Director of Alumni Relations

Recently, I was on a trip to Washington, D.C., with a packed schedule in front of me and short windows of time in which to get from point a to point b between meetings.  I made the most of a cold day, feverishly walking past the U.S. Capitol building to my lunch appointment.   Read more...

REFLECTIONS ON AN ACADEMY TRADITION: "HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS"

by Alex L. '17

As far back as I can remember, the Academy's senior-class production of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" has been a signal for the start of Winter Break.  Though I can't really remember, I can only imagine that I was terrified (and then amused) by the seniors looking and acting crazy.  It has been a tradition that I look forward to every year.  Read more...

Academy Fund

We support the Academy Fund because we are grateful to our Academy for providing an abundance of opportunity that shaped our lives and helped to develop our character.  It gives us a great amount of pride to see the same drive and passion that we received years ago, alive, making a great impact on all the students here at our school today.  Our alumni network is our most valuable asset.  Join us in supporting the Academy, just as the faculty and staff supported us in pursuing our dreams and goals.  Give now...
