Director of Admissions and Marketing

Harrisburg Academy seeks an accomplished and innovative Director of Admissions and Marketing to enhance communications with all constituencies, raise the school’s visibility, and advance its brand.

 

Harrisburg Academy, founded in 1785, is a thriving PK-12 co-educational, independent day school serving a diverse population of 330 students. The school is located in Wormleysburg, Pennsylvania. The Campus is beautiful, safe, and well-maintained and support the school’s educational mission. Basic Function

Reporting to the Head of School and working with the senior administrative team, the Director of Admissions and Marketing will lead, plan, direct, and implement overall strategies for all marketing and communications on behalf of Harrisburg Academy in order to raise the visibility, advance its brand, and articulate clear messaging to internal and external constituencies.

 

The Director will oversee and actively participate in the creation, design, budget, and production of regularly produced events and all school publications. Additionally, the Director will coordinate all advertising, publicity, and public relations and serve as the school’s spokesperson when so designated by the Head of School.

 

The primary objective of the Director of Admissions and Marketing is to create and communicate a compelling story about Harrisburg Academy. This message should lead to increased admissions applications and should support the efforts of the Development Department. The Director of Marketing and Communications will oversee and collaborate with one staff member focused on school-wide communications as well as three staff members focused on admissions.

 

The Director of Admissions and Marketing will be expected to:

  • Rapidly acclimate to the Harrisburg Academy; become familiar with the history, culture, traditions, and constituencies of the school; understand the educational philosophy; know all marketing and communications activities of the department.
  • Develop marketing and communications strategies and plans that advance the Academy and drive increased engagement with prospective and current constituencies.
  • Collaborate with administrative departments in articulating their purpose and ongoing work. Specifically, this includes the Head of School, Development, Admissions, Academic Divisions, and Institutional Technology.
  • Ensure brand and messaging quality and consistency and establish guidelines to apply across all departments, activities, and events at the school and among professional and volunteer leadership.
  • In collaboration with the admission staff, design strategies and implement concrete plans to increase student applications and maintain prospective student and family interest.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Development, design strategies and implement concrete plans to capitalize on increased visibility and clear branding of the school to drive increased contributed revenue.
  • Plan for and deploy digital activities: website, online campaigns, email marketing, social media, and digital content production.
  • Plan and manage the department budget in order to maximize the effectiveness of all communications. This includes bidding out production of materials when appropriate to outside vendors.
  • Create and execute a plan that regularly places the school in local media. Manage all messaging in the media.
  • Review, revise, and update as necessary, the school’s crisis communication plan.
  • Manage all aspects of the school’s print and electronic communications, ensuring the continuity of the school’s brand and logo. Oversee the work of graphic designers and print vendors in production of printed materials and web visuals.
  • Engage actively in professional development in order to remain current in best practices related to independent school communications, emerging social media, and effective marketing and advertising strategies.
  • Provide staff leadership to the department in all respects, including assisting in hiring, day-to-day management, and motivation of marketing staff and contractors, ensuring professional development and excellence.
  • Participate actively in the work and success of the senior leadership team and provide support for school events and administrative jobs as requested.

Ideal Experience

The Director of Admissions and Marketing will have the following types of experience and qualifications:

  • A BA/BS degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to marketing and communications; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • Leadership experience in marketing and communications, preferably in an independent school or other non-profit organization.
  • Outstanding speaking, writing, and editing skills.
  • Deep knowledge of the principles of marketing and communications and fluency in using social media effectively.
  • Ability to develop, monitor, and adhere to budgets and production schedules.
  • Ability to create print materials using Photoshop, InDesign or other comparable layout software.
  • Demonstrated success in bringing regular, positive media attention to an organization.
  • Demonstrated success in supervising and managing a staff.
  • Demonstrated success in managing multiple projects with shifting priorities and competing deadlines.

Faculty and Staff Positions

Lower School Librarian (three-fourths time)

Harrisburg Academy is looking for a collaborative, forward-thinking, and experienced Lower School Librarian for the start of the 2019-20 Academic Year to fulfill a three-fourths Library and Technology teacher position.

Proven experience working with students in a library learning space is preferred.

 

The ideal candidate will support and grow a culture of reading and evaluation of information by:

  • Leading library and technology instruction for the Lower School. Develop and collaborate on grade-appropriate research units, assisting teachers on electronic and print materials for classroom use. \
  • Sharing in the daily management of the library and learning commons, including reference, readers’ advisory, circulation, and content curation
  • Establish and evolve library best practices.
  • Perform school duties and supervises activities as requested.

Desired Qualifications

  • Degree in Library and Information Science
  • Experience as a teacher-librarian in a school setting
  • Current background clearances

Communications Associate

Harrisburg Academy, an independent preschool through college preparatory day school located in Wormleysburg, Pennsylvania, seeks a dynamic, strategic, and creative individual to provide operational and some administrative support for the school’s institution-wide marketing and communications efforts.

Description
The communications associate is an entry-level position that will report directly to the director of communications. The position will include daily work in several disciplines: writing, public relations/ interviewing, magazine production, electronic communications, social media, website content management, and photography. The successful candidate will also assist the director of communications with advertising activities, graphic design, search engine optimization, and video production projects. The ability to multitask and stay organized is a must. The Academy’s Communications Office has a dual focus on traditional and electronic communications; therefore, candidates for the communications associate position should be well-rounded communicators who are comfortable using technology and building in-person relationships. Past experience working with children and/or non-profit organizations is a plus.

The position is a full-time, 12-month staff appointment.

Qualifications / Minimum Requirements

  • Candidate should have a high level of integrity and a strong work ethic and be a compassionate, respectful team player with a sense of humor
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or advanced degree in communications, journalism, advertising/public relations, marketing or English

Database Manager

Harrisburg Academy, an independent preschool through college preparatory day school located in Wormleysburg, Pennsylvania, seeks a personable, organized, and results-oriented individual to provide support for the school’s Development and Alumni Relations Office.

 

Position Summary:
The database manager is responsible for managing the donor database, Raiser’s Edge. Reporting to the director of development and alumni relations, the database manager is a member of the Harrisburg Academy development team.

 

The position is a full-time, 12-month staff appointment.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Database Administration

  • Manages Raiser’s Edge database and keeps it secure and clean by developing and implementing Best Practices re: policies, procedures, and controls
  • Responsible for processing of gifts daily, maintaining donor information accuracy, restricted designations, soft credits, and cleaning operations
  • Prepares stewardship letters for donors, including for events
  • Works with the Director of Development and the Director of Finance to reconcile donations
  • Assist the development office with the preparation for fundraising events as needed (mailing lists, name tags, etc.)
  • Sorts the Development Office mail; scans and shares the gift back-up
  • Export of data from OnCampus to Raisers Edge database
  • Updates professional skills annually
  • Administrative projects, including scanning, photo crop, and other duties as assigned

Prospect Management and Research

  • Conducts donor research to identify current and potential donors, including grant opportunities through foundations
  • Analyzes incoming parents annually to identify prospects for the fundraising pipeline, assign ratings as appropriate
  • Prepares summaries of current and historical relationships with the organization, if any, as well as potential and propensity to donate
  • Works with the development team to strategize, identify, and rank individual donor and organizational prospects within Raiser’s Edge
  • Develops and prepares detailed profiles and reports including biographical and business information, financial assets, areas of interest, philanthropic support, and affiliations
  • Supports moves management process with regular reports and assistance with analysis
  • Remains current and fully informed on prospect management and research trends and available resources in the field

Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree from a college or university
  • Four years of job-related experience, preference in a school, college/university
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Raiser’s Edge or similar prospect research database
  • Blackbaud Certification in Raiser’s Edge (b-CRE or b-CRE-Pro) a plus
  • Applicant must be intuitive, tech-oriented, and a self-starter
  • Ability to work across departments to accomplish tasks at hand

Activity Coordinator

Join a team to carry out all aspects of planning, preparing, and producing successful after-school programs for pre-school through 4th grades at Harrisburg Academy.


Daily activities include time for reading and homework, as well as indoor and outdoor free-play. Theme-based crafts, games, and literacy activities provide enrichment for students to develop both social and academic skills.


During the school year, the hours are 2:30 - 6 p.m. Monday through Friday with the possibility of additional hours on special days and during the summer.
