Administrator Positions

Head of Early Childhood / Lower School

Harrisburg Academy, a pre-K through 12th grade co-educational independent school founded in 1784 and with a total student population of 330 students, is now accepting resumes from candidates interested in becoming the school’s next head of Early Childhood and Lower School divisions. Harrisburg Academy’s Early Childhood and Lower School divisions annually enroll 150 students and include 24 faculty and staff.  Our ideal candidate will be innovative and enthusiastic, committed to administering a dynamic program, and an ambitious leader who is eager to draw upon our mission to create a unique and engaging educational experience.


As a member of the Academy’s senior leadership team, the head of Early Childhood and Lower School reports directly to the head of school and collaborates with all other administrative programs and the head of the Middle and Upper School divisions.


Qualified candidates will possess:

  • A Master's or Doctorate in education; experience with leadership and supervision preferred.
  • Experience teaching in an Early Childhood or Lower School classroom
  • Knowledge and understanding of the developmental stages of early and middle childhood
  • Knowledge and understanding of independent schools
  • Interest in Responsive Classroom, training preferred
  • Understanding of social-emotional learning
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Appreciation for the importance of a strong and visible Early Childhood and Lower School program

Responsibilities include:

  • Model core values of Harrisburg Academy and support its mission
  • Oversee daily operations of the Early Childhood and Lower School divisions
  • Supervision of Early Childhood and Lower School faculty
  • Sustaining and further developing an integrated and rich learning environment
  • Build strong parent partnerships
  • Assistance in the admission process
  • Coordination of student concerns, needs, and overall wellness
  • Supervision of director of academic support & enrichment
  • Participation as a member of the Administrative Council Small (consisting of the head of school and all division heads)
  • Participation as a member of the Administrative Council Large (consisting of the head of school, all division heads, directors of admission, development, technology, communications, athletics, and the school counselor)
  • Attendance and participation in Board of Trustee meetings and serve on designated Board of Trustee committees as assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the head of school (Currently includes supervision of the Extended Day Program and oversight of EDP director and staff; supervision of Summer Camp program and oversight of Summer Camp director and staff)
  • Maintain budgets for both divisions

Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience.  This position begins July 1, 2018.

Faculty and Staff Positions

Assistant Director of Alumni Relations

Harrisburg Academy, an independent preschool through college preparatory day school located in Wormleysburg, Pennsylvania, seeks a personable, organized, and results-oriented individual to provide support for the school’s Development and Alumni Relations Office.

Position Summary:
The assistant director of alumni relations will oversee the alumni relations program at Harrisburg Academy to increase alumni engagement, philanthropic education, and financial support.  He or she will report to the director of development and alumni relations.

The position is a full-time, 12-month staff appointment.

Essential Functions:

Alumni Relations

  • Assess the effectiveness of programs and special events, developing a multi-year strategy for increased alumni engagement
  • Design and execute alumni programming
  • Determine strategy and implement all special events specific to alumni such as Alumni Weekend and the Alumni Achievement Awards ceremony
  • In partnership with the Communications Office, manage the alumni Facebook page and provide content for this and other social media, and prepare content for the Alumni Explorer eNewsletter

Alumni Annual Fund

  • Identify alumni major donors and prospects in collaboration with the director of development
  • Serve as a solicitor for the Academy Fund, the Academy’s annual fund
  • Establish and oversee a planned giving program

Volunteer Engagement

  • Steward the school’s relationships with longtime alumni volunteers and supporters. Identify and engage new alumni to become more involved with the Academy.
  • Provide staff leadership to the Alumni Engagement Council, assisting with goals, programming, organizational structure, and event and meeting planning
  • Collaborate with the director of development to support reunion committees and class representatives
  • Provide partnership as needed for the annual fundraising benefit, particularly, soliciting alumni support and involvement
  • Develop an alumni networking program starting with groups in major cities including Harrisburg, Philadelphia and other major cities where one or more alumni are willing to lead “meet-ups" in their city

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of five years of alumni relations experience at an educational institution
  • Familiarity with and enthusiasm for the Academy’s mission;
  • Experience working with volunteer leaders, including staffing of volunteer committees
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; detail-oriented
  • Well-developed social skills; ability to interact and address large groups of constituents as well as one-on-one meetings with a population that encompasses a wide range of age groups and backgrounds
  • Ability to anticipate project needs, discern work priorities, and meet deadlines with little supervision
  • Desire to be part of a team with the capacity to work well individually
  • Exceptional initiative, work ethic, and self-accountability
  • Ability to craft strategy, while maintaining an excellent grasp on details
  • Demonstrated success in program development and the ability to inspire others
  • Comfort and experience with relationship management software, knowledge of Raiser’s Edge preferred
  • Ability to work nights and weekends, as required

After-School Staff

Harrisburg Academy is currently accepting applications for both areas of our part-time after-school program (Early Childhood/Lower School-aged students and Middle School/Upper School-aged students).  We are seeking individuals who have a love of working with children. The position requires good communication skills, a sense of creativity and enthusiasm, the ability to plan and implement age-appropriate activities, and the skills to work well with parents and community members. Applicants need to be at least 18 years old, are required to pass a full background check, and must be able to adhere to the school's dress code policy. Extended Day Program (EDP)—late August to early June, 2:30-6 p.m., plus special days

Located on campus, the Extended Day Program is a blend of recreational and enrichment activities based around a series of themes. Teachers / counselors who love working with children, demonstrate creativity, enthusiasm, responsibility, and friendliness.  The Extended Day Program helps preschool through elementary school-age students develop both socially and physically through organized recreation and positive encouragement.  We provide a variety of structured and free-choice activities that promote individual and social development.  Daily favorites include crafts, games, and reading, as well as inside and outside play.  Please note that the EDP team also offers child care from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on days when classes are not in session (such as faculty in-service days, parent-teacher conferences, and some school breaks). 


After School Study Clubs—late August to early June, 2:30-6 p.m.

Study hall monitors ensure a safe, studious environment for our Middle School and Upper School Study Clubs (5th through 12th grades). 

 

Essential Functions for After-School Staff Members:
•    Supervise, monitor, and assist children ranging from 3 to 18 years old as they participate in a wide variety of after-school activities, both inside and outside
•    Organize and lead both large- and small-group games and activities that are age-appropriate
•    Clearly communicate and collaborate with all co-workers, parents, and participants
•    Maintain a consistent environment, which includes working as scheduled (flexible schedules are available during program hours)

 

 

Summer Day Camp Counselor—early-June to mid-August 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

An all-day version of our Extended Day Program with added summer activities, including pool time and field trips.

Varsity Girls’ Soccer Head Coach
