Fine & Performing Arts

During the School Day

Central Penn Parent Family Favorite logoAll Harrisburg Academy students, preschool through 12th grade, have a multitude of opportunities to engage in fine and performing arts.  Vocal music is taught at each level from HATS to 4th grade. Our Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten students participate in a strings program, which is implmented in small-group lessons and performed at concerts throughout the year.  A beloved Academy tradition, students in Kindergarten through 4th grade come together to perform a short musical, complete with lines, songs, costumes, scenery, and lighting.  In Lower School, the Academy's elementary school division, students also participate in art and instrumental music classes.

Middle School students have curricular art and music classes and can elect to participate in MS Band, Orchestra, Chorus, and Drama.  Each spring, the MS Chorus performs a junior musical; past productions include “Aladdin,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Seussical,” and “Alice in Wonderland.”  Students with a passion and skill for music have the opportunity to audition and "play up" with Upper School ensembles.

Students in the Academy's high school, the Upper School, have many music and art electives from which to choose, including US Band, Orchestra, and Choir; Music Theory; IB Music; Watercolor; Architecture; and IB Art, to name just a few.

After-School

Extra opportunities for enrichment in fine and performing arts are available after school. Art Club, which is especially valuable to those fledgling Picassos looking for even more guided instruction time in the art studio, is offered in eight-week sessions.  Because of the materials associated with this after-school activity, an additional fee is charged.  Lower School Orchestra is available for string musicians (cello, viola, violin, and string bass) who are also taking private lessons outside of school and have the ability to read music. This ensemble meets twice per week during the school year and also performs at all Lower School concerts.

The US art department organizes a number of field trips throughout the year, including a trip to New York City. Upper School students have the opportunity to participate in a fall musical, which further enhances the Academy's fine and performing arts programming.

US music students also audition for various local (county, district, and state) music festivals. In 2011, Academy students ranked #1 and #4 in the state for orchestra and choir, respectively. Academy graduates often pursue careers in the arts and have been accepted at prestigious music and art schools across the nation (including University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music, Berklee College of Music, and Maryland Institute College of Art).
