Alex LaBella

Champlain College

Game Art and Animation

Alex LaBella ’17 spent summers at college art camps across the country to help him find the best fit in a school.  He was so confident in his choice that he applied and was admitted Early Decision to Champlain College to study game art and animation.  Early Decision (ED) is a binding admission agreement between a student and his or her first-choice institution; the student has agreed to enroll at the institution if admitted and will withdraw all other admission applications from consideration.  Champlain is a Competitive school according to Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges and #3 for Most Innovative Schools as ranked by US News and World Report.

“Game art and animation is a pretty uncommon field and few colleges offer this major at the moment,” Alex said.  “I need a good blend of science and art and Champlain will provide that.”

During his 15-year career at Harrisburg Academy, Alex has excelled in these areas and was the recipient of the Harrisburg Academy Science award and the Harrisburg Academy Art Award in 8th grade, along with the Richard William Johnson Award for expository writing and the Trustees Art Award in 12th grade.

Alex learned about the field of game art and animation through a Lunch ‘n’ Learn session arranged by Mr. Terry Bowie.  Bowie arranged for David Kury, a senior producer at Crystal Dynamics, to meet with Academy students.  Through conversation with Kury, Alex saw the art of video game design and decided to follow this career path.

Additionally, Alex connected with current Champlain students through social media and discovered the college has a fencing program — a new interest he acquired in 2016 through the Academy’s club fencing program.  Alex was also member of the Varsity Swimming, Varsity Boys’ Tennis, and Upper School Club Golf teams, and played piano in many of the school’s music ensembles.
