Aly Darwish

University of the Arts

Jazz Performance and Composition

Aly Darwish '17Aly Darwish ’17 never set out to be a musician.  Making the choice to learn the upright bass as a high school sophomore was a spontaneous decision — a decision that has led to many sleepless nights spent practicing and completing homework and many miles on the road to private lessons in Philadelphia, but one that has led him to secure a generous scholarship at University of the Arts in Philadelphia.  Aly plans to major in jazz performance and composition.

Admission to a performing arts program is an extensive process that requires an application and an audition.  Aly felt Harrisburg Academy’s college counseling program “allowed me to understand every aspect of the process.  Being able to interview and network gave me the confidence in the audition process needed for music conservatory.”

Aly earned the Class of 1994 award for the student in the Upper School who best exemplifies effort and excellence in the area of the performing arts.  In addition to performing with the Academy band, orchestra, and chorus, Aly played Varsity Boys’ Soccer and Varsity Boys’ Tennis.

Aly plans to continue playing upright and electric bass, study music theory and fundamentals on piano and guitar, and maybe pick up the trumpet.  Aly played throughout Central Pennsylvania during his high school years and hopes to continue to play locally in Philadelphia.
