Amelia Nazar

University of Pittsburgh

Civil Engineering and Architecture

Amelia Nazar '17When applying to college, Amelia Nazar ’17 had full confidence the University of Pittsburgh was the school for her — so confident, in fact, that she only submitted this one college application. After all, four generations can’t be wrong!

Amelia comes from a long line of Pitt alumni, tracing back to her great-great uncle. Her grandparents met during their undergrad years at Pitt, and her mother and three uncles are alumni as well. The University of Pittsburgh is ranked Highly Competitive by Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges. Amelia plans to study civil engineering and architecture with a language minor. “I had no difficulties – I am pretty confident in this choice,” she said.

Amelia found great success during her 15 years at Harrisburg Academy. During commencement exercises, she was awarded the Class of ’79 Award for French, the Harrisburg Academy Community Service Award, and the National School Choral Award; on the court, Amelia leaves the Academy as the Varsity Girls’ basketball all-time leading rebounder; and among her peers, Amelia was elected senior class president, yearbook editor, and Tri-M historian.

Outside of school, Amelia received a United States Figure Skating Association Silver Level Achievement, awarded to senior student-athletes who have pursued figure skating while maintaining a high level of academics. Additionally, Amelia was selected as a Carlisle Sentinel “Teen of the Week.”

As an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate, Amelia was awarded the IB Scholarship for Summer Study in 2015. Amelia traveled to France during the summer of 2016 for a cultural and language immersion program. As part of the program, the students signed a pledge to speak French every day to those in and outside of the group. She quickly learned that doing everything in another language was exhausting. However, by the end of her homestay experience, she was able to converse easily. The experience gave her a sense of independence, confidence, and self-awareness — qualities that will continue to serve her well.

Although Amelia was confident Pitt was her one and only choice, she is thankful for the many college visits she was able to experience through the Academy’s college counseling program. By visiting other schools, she learned what she wants in her college experience and hopes to participate in intramural athletics and language clubs.
