Sara Safiullah

University of Pittsburgh
Neuroscience or International Relations

Sara Safiullah '17Sara Safiullah ’17 had a few things in mind when choosing her college, specifically: a school in the city; one that is competitive but encourages collaborative learning; one that offers opportunities to focus on activism; but also one that has strong STEM and research programs. Sara chose the University of Pittsburgh, a school she felt has exactly what she desires. University of Pittsburgh is ranked as Highly Competitive by Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges.

“The Academy helped develop my passions and I was able to combine all of my interests to put my passions into action,” Sara said. Sara’s passions helped her successfully complete two years of college-level course work to earn the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Additionally, Sara won the Harrisburg Academy Global Stewardship Award, given by the history department to recognize the Upper School student who goes above and beyond the classroom to promote global awareness. She also was awarded the Class of ’79 Award for the student who has worked diligently to achieve the highest level of proficiency in comprehension and expression in Spanish.

Sara intends to study neuroscience or international relations. “Scientifically speaking, I’ve always been attracted to brain function and the psychological approach to brain study. I’m also interested in political and social awareness and advocating for underrepresented communities.” Sara spent many hours outside of school volunteering at Pinnacle Health Hospital and Tahir Academy.

During her three years at Harrisburg Academy, Sara was a member of the National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor society (serving as president her senior year), senior class vice president, and a delegate for Model UN. She also ran track & field through the Academy’s cooperative sports agreement with Trinity High School, and played Varsity Girls’ Basketball for the Spartans. Sara frequently entertained our community during Morning Meeting, and she hopes to continue singing with a cappella groups on campus.
