Camp Themes - Early Explorers Division

Summer Camp River Boat Field TripInstead of traveling off-campus for field trips, our youngest campers enrolled in the Early Explorers division will enjoy a full series of guest speakers and fun interactive on-campus field trips, from outside organizations, related to our theme.  The 2019 Summer Expeditions Day Camp themes for our Early Explorers division will be posted in December.  Below were the 2018 summer camp themes for a taste of what is to come!


Week 1 (June 11-15): What Floats Your Boat?

We will kick off our summer with get-to-know-you activities to build camp friendships.  Also, we will make some useful camp items, such as a canvas water bottle carrier and a coin purse for poolside popsicle money.

Week 2 (June 18-22): Seeing Stars

We’ll have fun with star-shaped crafts and the stories behind nighttime constellations.


6/19:  Ryan Bridge "The Bug Man" visits, along with some of his favorite friends.  Join us this week to find out the connection between these creatures and a summer constellation.  School Bus

6/21:  The Cosmic Adventures traveling planetarium will send campers on an outerspace journey within a computerized planetarium to learn about the moon, stars, and planets.   School Bus


Week 3 (June 25-29): I Spy

This week will feature crafts and activities that are based on the work of Eric Carle, author of “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” and “The Mixed-Up Chameleon.”


6/28:  On board Susquehanna Art Museum's VanGo! Museum on Wheels, we will explore the inner workings of art museums "Behind the Scenes," including inspection of some art with a hands-on activity.   School Bus


Week 4 (July 2-6, closed on July 4th): Under the Sea

Each camper will receive a drawstring bag with air tank motif to help him or her dream of exploring the ocean.  In their bags, campers can place collections of crafts related to sea life.


7/3:  The Center for Aquatic Sciences at Adventure Aquarium will visit, along with some live ocean animals. Campers will have a chance to dress up and move like the animals they learn about who live under the sea.  School Bus

7/5: Mike Sgringnoli of Mr. Mike's Dinosaurs will lead us in a Dinoriffic Art Project.  He will introduce an ancient swimming creature and then the children will create their own model with air-dry clay.  School Bus


Week 5 (July 9-13): Full STEAM Ahead

S.T.E.A.M. stands for science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. Highlights this week will include creating some pieces of geometric art and coding a robotic caterpillar to navigate an obstacle course.


7/10:   Thanks to the Girl Scouts and PPL, the STEM-Mobile is bringing a hands-on robotics program.  School Bus

7/12:   Ryan Bridge "The Bug Man" returns to give more detail about his friends and entomology (the science of insects and their relatives).  School Bus


Week 6 (July 16-20): Express Yourself

Campers will experiment with three types of basic percussion instruments. They will also decorate a mask and award themselves pretend trophies to celebrate their inner super powers.


7/19:  Mike Sgrignoli of Mr. Mike's Dinosaurs returns to perform a set of dino-centric poems set to music.  The children will be able to jam along as the percussion section.  School Bus


Week 7 (July 23-27): E-I-E-I-O

Campers will come home with a bumper crop of crafts related to farm animals and plants.


7/26:  W.O.W. (Whitaker on Wheels) After a story and a song, our young farmers will take a turn at the seed sorting station before decorating a cup and planting seeds that they can watch grow over the coming days.  School Bus


Week 8 (July 30-August 3): Time Travelers

It's time to have fun with dances and games that have been popular in a variety of times and places!  Campers will make or decorate several classic toys and games to continue the fun at home.

Week 9 (August 6-10): Building Excitement!

We’ll close out our summer with fond memories and our annual favorite — the talent show!  When we are not practicing for the talent show, we will try our hand at a simple wood-working project.
