Newman Family Scholarship Fund

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we invite you to participate in the creation of a special endowment scholarship fund to honor James Newman, Ph.D., who recently retired as Head of School on June 30, 2019.

For over 235 years, The Harrisburg Academy has set the standard for academic excellence in South Central Pennsylvania. Dr. Newman served as Harrisburg Academy's Head of School since 2003. During his tenure, the Academy has become a learning community bonded by its support for high-quality teaching and learning, and dedicated to preparing students for the challenges of the 21st century. Jim’s global vision has helped make Harrisburg Academy a globally focused school and one with a school-wide curriculum that underscores global understanding -- including the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma program for Upper School students. The Academy proudly stands as the first school in the greater Harrisburg area to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program and merit scholarship.

Jim has instituted a strong faculty professional development program; and most recently, a focus on experiential learning as promoted by the new Centers for Experiential Learning & Innovation. In addition to these accomplishments, Jim has been responsible for leading the Academy as it implemented the following initiatives and capital improvements:

  • Reinvigorating the annual Founder’s Day celebration honoring members of the Harrisburg Academy family for dedicated leadership and meritorious service to the school at the same time showcasing the musical and oratorical talents of our students who speak and perform at the event;
  • Holding an annual luncheon for trustee emeriti and retired teachers;
  • Establishing a community advisory board and a separate Harrisburg Academy Foundation Board of Directors;
  • Creating the John Harris Circle and a separate Faculty Endowment Fund; and
  • Leading the school’s capital campaign. The campaign’s aim was to raise $5.5 million for facilities renovation and new construction; raise $1.5 million for increasing the Academy’s endowment; and raise $1.5 million for the Academy Fund, the Academy’s annual giving program. This capital campaign saw the renovation of science laboratories, construction of a (1) new 3,200-square-foot music suite, including two large instruction rooms, smaller practices rooms, and instrument storage, creation of the McCormick Auditorium Commons, and upgrade of the auditorium’s entrance space and renovating the hallway leading to the band room.

In furtherance of Jim’s significant contributions to the Academy, the Board of Trustees believes that the creation of a separate endowment fund (the Newman Family Scholarship Fund) devoted to providing financial aid to students who might not otherwise be able to take advantage of an Academy education will best honor Jim’s commitment to the Academy. In order to assure our ability to create such a fund, we must raise no less than $25,000. As parents of children who graduated with Jim’s son, Peter ’08, it is our personal hope that through your generosity, we are able to raise significantly more than that amount to guarantee his legacy.

Thank you in advance for your donation to this worthwhile endeavor.
