Merit Scholarships

Lower and Middle School students collaborate

The Academy is proud to offer two merit scholarship opportunities for students, both current and new. For more information about these scholarship opportunities or need-based financial aid, please contact the Admission Office.

George C. Hoopy '26 Scholarship

The George C. Hoopy Scholarship is awarded through an endowed gift from the late businessperson and philanthropist, George C. Hoopy ’26. After graduating from the Academy, Hoopy founded the Hoopy Insurance Agency and along with seven other business owners the West Shore Businessman’s Association, which in 1956 became the West Shore Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, Hoopy was named Alumnus of the Year in 1999.

The Hoopy Scholarship is a renewable scholarship awarded to an incoming 9th grade student as a percentage of the student’s annual tuition. The Hoopy Scholarship is solely merit-based. Recipients may separately apply for need-based financial aid. Each year, the number of new scholarships and amount of each scholarship will vary based upon the value of the Hoopy Fund within the Academy’s endowment and the number of applications received. A maximum of five Hoopy Scholarships will be awarded each year.

The Spong Family Scholarship

This one-time scholarship is available to 8th grade Academy students who have re-enrolled for 9th grade. This scholarship is funded through the bequest of Marian M. Spong, which provided over $300,000 to the Academy's endowment in support of student scholarships. Except for students formerly named as Corporate or Community Merit Scholars before these programs were discontinued, all current 8th graders are eligible to apply for the Spong Family Scholarship. This merit-based scholarship is awarded as a percentage of the student's 9th grade net tuition and does not take financial need into consideration.  Applications for the Spong Family Scholarship are available online and are due March 15, 2020. Late submissions will not be accepted.
